KATHMANDU: The US Marines’ UH-1Y Huey helicopter, on May 12, crashed due to bad weather and difficult terrain, a joint investigation team of Nepal Army and American experts concluded. “The chopper suddenly entered into an instrument meteorological condition (IMC) due to geographic structure of Kalinchok range and bad weather, and crashed on a hard rocky surface, west to Kalinchok hill at the altitude of 11,200 feet,” states a press statement issued by the NA on Friday. Six US Mariners and two NA soldiers were killed in the May 12 crash in Ghorthali VDC of Sindhupalchok. Later, five more bodies of locals were recovered from the incident side. Following the accident, the NA on May 20 had formed a 15-member probe committee headed by Brigadier General Sudheer Shrestha. The investigation team presented its report to the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Kripasur Sherpa, on Friday. The probe team has also recommended the government to adopt some measures to avoid such accidents in the future.
