KATHMANDU: All school buildings to be rebuilt in the wake of the devastating April 25 earthquake will comply with the building codes, a high official at the Ministry of Education (MoE) said. Speaking at an interaction at the Reporters’ Club on Saturday, MoE Joint-Secretary Lava Dev Awasthi said physical structures of the schools to be rebuilt during the reconstruction campaign will follow the National Building Code. Claiming that international donors have mentioned education and physical structures of schools as major priorities while pledging support for the national reconstruction drive, Awasthi said the school rebuilding campaign will go smoothly by using internal, foreign and local resources. Meanwhile, he warned that the Ministry will act tough against schools which do not implement the government decision to waive 50 per cent fees for the month of Baishakh. Speaking at the function, President of Nepal Students Union and lawmaker Ranjit Karna demanded that the government accord a high priority to physical infrastructure construction of academic institutions as it is a must for continuation of education. Chairman of the UCPN-Maoist-affiliated student union, Ramesh Malla, opined that internal labour and skills should be used to rebuild schools. Educationists Bhim Dev Bhatta and Tirtha Khaniya also stressed that the government should effectively utilise donations received for the reconstruction drive.
