The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has sought the intervention of the US, which calls it a terrorist group, to bring an end to the more than 25 years of insurgency in India’s northeastern state of Assam. The ULFA, in a letter addressed to US President George W Bush, said the people of Assam and other northeastern states were being subjected to Indian military repression in the name of countering insurgency. “We sincerely believe that the US is the only country that can use its influence to bring about a satisfactory solution to the Assam-India conflict and therefore appeal for Your Excellency’s intervention in the matter of resolving the conflict,” ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said in the letter.
