KATHMANDU, August 7 Nepali Congress Constituent Assembly member Amresh Kumar Singh on Friday submitted his clarification to party’s Chief Whip Chin Kaji Shrestha claiming that he had committed no wrong. Chief Whip Shrestha had asked clarification from Singh for his absence in his constituency during the public feedback collection on the draft constitution and his alleged secessionist remarks at a meeting. Singh said he was present in his constituency during the feedback collection programme, but since people in his constituency were very unhappy about the draft constitution, particularly for failing to demarcate the boundaries of the federal units, he could not attend the programme. “It may appear that I violated party’s directives but in the long run it will prove to be in the party’s interest,” he said of his absence during the public feedback collection programme. On the allegation of his alleged secessionist remark, Singh said what he spoke at meeting between Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee Chair Baburam Bhattarai and Madhesi intellectuals/CA members a few days ago, he just wanted to highlight the point that all Nepalis, including Madhesis, should be treated with dignity and their genuine grievances should be addressed. He said the main message of his remark was that if a new constitution was promulgated without boundaries of the federal units, it would be against the spirit of the Interim Constitution, popular movement and Madhes movement and that could lead to conflict. Singh said he spoke those words because of his love and respect for the country’s territorial integrity and his loyalty to the nation should not be suspected. “How can the loyalty of a person who advocates equality for all communities be questioned? I cannot even think of disintegration of the country,” Singh said in his clarification letter. Singh added that it would be against the national interest to ignore Madhesis’ aspirations. Singh said it would be undemocratic to form statute on fast track.
