BIRGUNJ: The Indian security forces have beefed up security at the entry points, including in Raxaul, along the India-Nepal border in the wake of violent protests in Nepal's Tarai region including Parsa district. Officials at the Raxaul-based Indian Customs said that security was intensified taking into consideration the unrest in Nepali side and the upcoming elections in the bordering Indian state of Bihar. Vehicular movement and trade through the border entry points have been affected owing to the shutdown and agitation in the Nepali side, according to Assistant Collector Kamalesh Kumar at the Indian Customs in Raxaul. 'We haven't stopped consignments entering Nepal. But as clearing agents aren’t working due to security reasons there has been a slowdown in clearance of consignments,' Kumar said. Personnel of India's border security force, Sashastra Seema Bal, are seen mobilised in high numbers in the Indian side. They have been checking the documents of vehicles coming from and going to Nepal in at least four points. During the period of 40 days, as many as 26 customs declarations have been made in the Indian side for the petroleum products and other consignments, according to a source. Earlier, on average 250 tankers used enter Nepal every day ferrying petroleum products. The number, however, has dropped to 70-80 now.
