US calls for peaceful solution to Tarai stir

Kathmandu, November 3 The United States has urged all Nepali stakeholders to engage in a democratic process through peaceful and nonviolent means. Speaking at a daily press briefing in Washington DC late yesterday, Director of Press Office of the US State Department, Elizabeth Trudeau said, “We are aware of the reports (of violence) We’re closely following the situation in Nepal. We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We encourage all Nepalese to continue to engage in the democratic process through peaceful, nonviolent means.” She urged the Nepali security forces to exercise appropriate restraint as people exercise their democratic rights. “And we encourage we continue to urge Nepal’s leaders to reach an accommodation that builds the broadest possible support for the constitution,” she added. When asked if she agreed with the claim that the recently promulgated Constitution that Nepal “was not inclusive enough”, she said “Okay, well, for internal Nepali politics, I’m going to refer you to the Government of Nepal.” An Indian national was killed in police firing during a violent protest in Birgunj yesterday.
