KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday urged the government to form the National Reconstruction Authority at the earliest. The Commission said the Authority was necessary to accelerate reconstruction works in the wake of the devastating April 25 earthquake and its aftershocks. Meanwhile, the Commission said many earthquake survivors in worst-hit districts are still deprived of basic facilities including foods, clothes and medicines. The Commission found during its monitoring that the current situation of the nation coupled with fuel crisis, high inflation, cold weather, black marketing and scarcity of essential goods have deteriorated the human rights of the survivors. Various agencies working for the quake victims have stopped their efforts citing the fuel crisis, which has deepened woes of the survivors, it noted. The Commission has urged the government to make necessary arrangement at the earliest to safeguard basic human rights of the quake victims. The Commission has observed that many of the quake victims have not received identity cards yet, compelled to live in temporary shelters and deprived of the immediate government assistance of Rs 15, 000. Senior citizens, new mothers, pregnant women and children have been worst hit by the current situation, it added.
