London, July 21:

Steve Harmison grabbed five wickets as England’s bowlers ripped through Australia’s batting lineup to dismiss the tourists for just 190 on the opening day of the first Ashes Test at Lord’s.

Harmison’s 5-43 off 11.2 overs included 4-7 in just 14 balls. Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones claimed two wickets each, while Matthew Hoggard took one as the Australians were all out before tea. Harmison wrapped up the innings with the dismissal of Jason Gillespie for his sixth five-wicket haul in 31 Tests. In England’s reply, Glenn McGrath needed just five balls of the final session to haul Australia right back into contention, as he whipped out both of England’s openers, Marcus Trescothick (4) and Andrew Strauss (2), and dismissed three others. With it, he became only the second fast bowler after Courtney Wa-lsh to take 500 Test wickets.

McGrath’s first ball after the break brought Australia to life, as Trescothick was squared up by a perfect off-stump lifter and squirted a thick edge to Justin Langer. He then bowled Michael Vaughan (3) and Ian Bell (6). He returned to dismiss Flintoff for a duck, as the home team were reeling at 25/5 after 18 overs. Australia won the toss and batted in cool, overcast conditions, with openers Justin Langer, who top-scored with 40, and Matthew Hayden (12) enduring a fiery opening spell from Harmison. Ricky Ponting looked in serious trouble when he was hit on the right cheek by a Harmison ball. Pont-ing’s helmet appeared to take some of the impact but he still suffered a nasty cut and was patched up on the field. Ponting faced just 10 more deliveries before edging a catch to Andrew Strauss in the slips off the bowling of Harmison to be out for nine. Australia reached 97-5 by lunch and the collapse continued after the break when Adam Gilchrist was caught behind off the bowling of Flintoff for 26. Shane Warne piled on 28 runs in 29 balls, while Simon Katich scored 27.
