Kathmandu, December 14 The tenth meeting of Nepal-India Joint Committee on Inundation and Flood Management was held in Kathmandu last week. After part of the meeting, which was held from December 6-10, officials of the two countries also made a field visit to the West Rapti River of Nepal. The Indian delegation was led by Coordination Member of Ganga Flood Control Commission Gorakh Thakur, while the Nepali side by led by Director General of the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention Niranjan Dev Pandey. According to the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the visit to Bagmati, Lalbakeya and Kamala rivers could not be undertaken and the committee members visited the West Rapti River on December 7-8, 2015, as proposed by the Nepali side. “Cooperation in water resources and river training are the most important areas of India-Nepal bilateral relations,” read an Indian embassy statement issued today. India has been providing assistance to Nepal for strengthening and expanding embankments along Lalbakeya, Bagmati, Kamla and Khando rivers. The work is at various stages of progress and till date, Rs 3670.66 million has been disbursed to government of Nepal, read the statement. India said it remains committed to working closely with Nepal for further strengthening its cooperation in all the areas of mutual interest, including water resources, and would extend assistance for river training and embankment construction on other major rivers.
