Kathmandu, January 14 Kanjirowa National Higher Secondary School today conducted a Model United Nations General Assembly. As in previous years, students from Grades VIII and IX participated as delegates of UN member states and discussed various issues of international affairs. The participants were divided into six different UN committees and bodies such as Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, Disarmament and International Security Committee, United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). Each representative presented a ‘Draft Resolution’ which was followed by a lot of debates as representatives from various member states took positions for and against the draft resolution. The event, which was shaped exactly in the form of the general assembly of the United Nations Organisation, included various contemporary burning issues affecting our globe. Some of the issues were Situation of Human Rights in Syria and the Middle East, Refugee Crisis in Europe, Counter Terrorism Strategies, International Strategies for Disaster Reduction and Relief, and Action against Gender Violence. According to a press statement issued here today by the school, Model United Nations is organised regularly at the school to help students learn the procedures and functions of the UN. “This activity is a very important part of practical education that helps in providing an opportunity of experiential learning for our students” said Principal,Mahendra Khanal in the statement. Their research on current affairs in international community and most importantly United Nations helps them learn to think globally, it said.
