Govinda KC warns eighth hunger strike from Monday

KATHMANDU: Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC on Wednesday announced that he would stage a fast-unto-death from coming Monday demanding implementation of the agreements the government had signed with him earlier. The veteran doctor at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital had staged hunger strike for seven times over past few years demanding reforms in the medical education sector. Dr KC issued a press statement today to announce the next strike putting forth four demands. He has served an ultimatum to the government till Sunday evening to address his demands. 'If not, I will stage a fast-unto-death from 5 pm, Monday, January 25,' he said. The protesting doctor's demands include formation of a Health Professional’s Education Commission to formulate a medical education policy, the policy's implementation as an act, no affiliation to or establishment of any medical college till enactment of the act, withdrawal of the bill which is currently under discussion at the House and legal provisions to end political appointment in universities among others.
