BIRGUNJ: Local traders from nearby areas - from both sides of the border - burned down tents set by the agitating Madhesi protesters and chased them away, at Nepal-India border in Birgunj on Friday. A group of Indian traders had come to the sit-in site and burned down the tents while some Nepali locals also supported them this afternoon. After the removal of the protesters and their tents, an empty truck left Birgunj for Raxaul while dozens of vehicles including containers entered Nepal. A number of carts loaded with various goods also entered Nepal. Spokesperson at the Birgunj Customs Office, Sushil Sharma, confirmed entry of as many as 92 vehicles. It had already been 135 days that the border was blocked by the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front, protesting the newly promulgated Constitution, since September 24. Tarai Madhes Democratic Party General Secretary Jitendra Sonal had reached the bordering Miteri Bridge in a bid to resume the sit-in and block the movement again. His attempt, however, failed as locals and some traders protested. A group of protesters led by Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal district chairman Pradeep Yadav, however, chanted slogans against the intervention. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the area.
