KATHMANDU: Fourteen Nepali songs were orchestrated by 36-member string orchestra on February 27 at Buddha Hall of DAV School in ‘Vishesh Badyavrinda Sangeetik Samaroha’. Three orchestras of Nepal — Annapurna Chamber Orchestra, Crescendo International Orchestra and Kathmandu Youth Orchestra came together to play the creations of Amber Gurung, Gopal Yonjan, Nati Kaji and Narayan Gopal among others. Tunes like Chyangba Ho Chyangba, Nau Lakha Tara, Ukali Oraliharuma, Jaga Lamka Chamka, Yo Nepali Shir Uchali and Rato Ra Chandra Surya were brought alive by an ensemble of instruments — violins, violas, double bass and cello. It was a grand presentation of Nepali contemporary as well as folk music. Organised by Taleju Dhankumari Kosh, the event aimed to make the dream of Nepali music legends (Gopal and Gurung) — of having an orchestra in Nepali music industry come true. Susanjayadevkrishna, President of the Kosh stated, “Narayan Gopal always believed that Nepali music could develop and go international only through orchestra. And Amber Gurung was brought to Nepal by king Mahendra to form an orchestra, which couldn’t happen.” But with the progress in orchestra and orchestral music in Nepal, that was initiated by Gopal and Gurung, events like these are being held. “Thus, their (Gopal and Gurung) orchestral dream is becoming reality,” he informed.
