Anti-elephantiasis campaign to begin today

KATHMANDU: The three-day anti-elephantiasis campaign is being started in 36 districts of the country from today. It is said that a total of 13 million people would be distributed the anti-elephantiasis medicines. Earlier, the campaign was held in 27 districts. The government had launched the campaign against lymphatic filariasis since 2003 after the cases of mosquito-borne disease were traced in 61 districts in the country. Director at the Epidemiology and Diseases Control Division of Department of Health Services Dr Baburam Marasini said that the medicines would be given to the folks for free. Dr Marasini said that the medicines against the diseases should be taken in six different phases but the children below two years, aspirant mothers, patients of epilepsy and patients of serious illness should not take these medicines. The medicines would be distributed in Bhojpur, Ilam, Jhapa, Dhankuta, Therathum, Phanchthar, Saptari, Siraha, Lalitpur, Baglung, Myagdi, Parbat, Lamjung, Dang, Rolpa, Rukum, Salyan, Banke, Bardiya, Jajarkot, Surkhet, Dailekh, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Doti, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Achham, Bajhang, Bajura and Darchula among others. It is said that a total of 13,078 health workers and 65,678 volunteers have been mobilised to make the campaign a success.
