Kathmandu, April 1 The government reiterated today that the joint statement of the EU-India Summit issued on Wednesday, which made a reference to Nepal’s newly adopted constitution, was inappropriate. Issuing a statement, government spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai said, “The Government of Nepal’s attention has been seriously drawn to the remarks about Nepal’s constitutional and political situation in the joint statement of the recent EU-India Summit. It is informed to all that Nepal does not have any constitutional problem at present.” The statement — which was issued following a Cabinet decision today — also endorsed yesterday’s press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this regard. Earlier, the Cabinet had stated that the EU-India joint statement was an interference in Nepal’s internal affairs. The government has reminded all that the new constitution of Nepal was promulgated in keeping with universal democratic norms and principles. It also reiterated that the people and the government of Nepal were committed to resolving their problems on their own. READ ALSO

Point 17 of the EU-India joint statement says, “India and the EU have agreed on the need for a lasting and inclusive constitutional settlement in Nepal that will address the remaining constitutional issues in a time-bound manner, and promote political stability and economic growth.”
