KATHMANDU: Former President Ram Baran Yadav claimed that he saved the Nepal Army from politicisation and other attempts to tarnish the image of the national security force. He, however, lamented that he could not save judiciary and other security agencies from political intervention during the tenure. The first President of Nepal was launching former Chief of Army Staff Chhatraman Gurung's autobiography 'Janatako Chhoro' in Capital on Sunday. On May 3, 2009, Yadav, as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of Nepal Army, had let the then Army Chief Rookmangud Katawal stay put while the government led by UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had relieved the latter of the duty without letting him complete the tenure. After the President's move, Dahal had put in papers the very next day. 'It was too tough for me to act as the Head of the State during the time of Prachanda (Dahal) who had just come from the revolt,' Yadav shared at the function. He was of the view that the Army always stood for democracy and it should be protected from undue political pressures. 'BRB dissolved House without consultation' Meanwhile, Yadav revealed that the then Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai dissolved the first Constituent Assembly without consultation with him. Bhattarai, in May 2012, had dissolved the first CA after it repeatedly failed to draft the Constitution and the Supreme Court restricted it from extending the deadline. Yadav also said he was against the then Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi taking over as the Chairman of the Interim Council of Ministers. 'I did not want, but it was compulsion,' he said, 'In this sense, I could not give justice to the judiciary.' 'I had wanted to appoint a former chief justice or an independent person as the prime minister for the election.' Suggestions to successor Meanwhile, former President Ram Baran Yadav also suggested his successor President Bidya Devi Bhandari to keep the national interests at the focus and rise up from petty political interests. Yadav also advised Bhandari to take initiatives to resolve the current political crisis by forging consensus between major political forces. The former Head of the State also urged all political parties to stay focused on strengthening democratic institutions. 'The nation has republicanism and democracy,' Yadav elaborated, 'But, no matter how many times the rule of law is preached, the political parties' attention to move the state mechanisms democratically is yet to achieve.' Speaking at the same function, former Prime Minister and CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal also commented that the national military force never acted against democracy.
