End discrimination against relief teachers: Lawmakers

Kathmandu, April 27 Lawmakers from three major political parties today pledged to take initiatives to amend the Education Bill currently under discussion in the Parliament. Speaking at an interaction organised by Nepal Relief Teacher Central Committee, Nepali Congress lawmaker Dhanaraj Gurung said, “Discrimination against relief teachers should come to an end. It is very sad that the Education Bill tabled in the Parliament fails to address the concerns of relief teachers. I will take initiatives to amend the bill.” Rameshwor Phuyal, lawmaker from CPN-UML, stressed on reforms in the education sector. “We have concluded our political revolution. It is now time for us to initiate reforms in the education sector,” he said. Chief of the education department of Unified CPN-Maoist Dhaniram Paudel said the government should end discrimination against various types of teachers. “There should be only one type of teachers  permanent. The government should remove all other categories.” Accusing the government of hindering development of the education sector, he said, “The Education Bill that is under discussion in the Parliament should incorporate the concerns of all kinds of teachers.” He further stressed on giving teachers permanent status through internal competition. Dr Hari Lamsal, spokesperson, Ministry of Education, said, “Relief teachers could get remote allowance, sick leave, uniform allowance and other facilities on par with other teachers if the schools prepared directives for it.”
