Life without regrets

Life without regrets

By Zekrom Sam

“I’ve lived a life without regrets” We have all heard this statement from someone at some point of our lives. Having lived a life without any regrets is truly remarkable. It is something that we all wish to achieve, but sadly, it’s also something that none of us can accomplish. Regrets and remorse are a part of our lives. We all have regrets about things that we did, or things that we didn’t do, opportunities missed, things that we should have said and things we wish we hadn’t. No man is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all have at least one moment that we wish we could just change or erase. When I think back on my past, I see myself taking all sorts of wrong directions. As a student, I always regret not having learnt how to ride a bike. During board exams, our exam centers are often placed pretty far from our place of residence. Reaching the exam centers would have been so much easier on a bike, but instead I have to rely on public transports, which is not a bad thing, but the traffic jams and the fear of not reaching the exam centers on time makes me regretful and resent my past decisions. This is coming from someone who hasn’t even lived half of his life yet, and the regrets I have are nothing compared to others who have it so much worse than me. I mean, there are people out there who have missed great opportunities, lost dear ones and even been scarred for their entire life because of a single bad decision. Yes, these people, they all hold regrets. Regrets! This single word alone can make you depressed for days, eat you from the inside and make you feel tiny. It seems we would be so much happier if we did not have any regrets. Wouldn’t it be great if we could go back in time and right all our wrongs? Life would just be perfect. But, there’s a catch. Every decision we make in life, even the terrible ones, makes us the person we are today. Our past actions define us; they make us the person we are meant to be. Regrets can be hard to deal with, but they are there for a reason. They are there to guide us so that we don’t go through the same situation again. In fact, valuable life lessons are learnt from our past mistakes. Each experience is a lesson. Sometimes, losing one thing opens up a new door to something else. This is what life is all about. So, when I hear someone say, “I’ve lived a life without regrets” I don’t believe the person saying this has not made a single bad decision in his/her life.
