KATHMANDU: A meeting of senior leaders of the major political parties, called by Speaker Onsari Gharti, failed to resolve their differences over new Parliamentary Regulations and ended without making any concrete decision on Friday. The Regulations have been stalled as the parties are at odds over the strength of Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC). As a result, the parliamentary hearing for the appointment of Chief Justice, 11 Supreme Court Justices and 23 ambassadors has been affected despite their nominations. The ruling parties have been pleading for a 15-member panel, while the main opposition Nepali Congress has voiced for retaining the 73-member PHSC as in the past. Both the sides stuck to their respective stances today as well. After the meeting, Speaker Gharti told the media she urged the leaders to forge an agreement in order to resolve the differences over the Regulations as soon as possible. According to her, the ruling parties and the main opposition asked each other to agree to their views, the Rastriya Samachar Samiti reported. Emerging from the meeting, CPN Maoist Centre Pushpa Kamal Dahal said efforts to forge an agreement over the Parliamentary Regulations will resume after the budget is presented at the House tomorrow.
