BIRGUNJ: Doctors on Sunday warned that they would halt emergency services in most of the hospitals if the arrested doctors, who are accused of acquiring fake academic credentials, were not released at the earliest. Upon the call of Nepal Medical Association (NMA) Birgunj, doctors morning carried out a rally in the border city this morning. A delegation led by Dr Pramod Sarraf, the NMA Birgunj Vice-President, submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer (CDO), Keshav Raj Ghimire, seeking release of eight members of the medical fraternity. Issuing a 24-hour ultimatum, the protesters said they would otherwise halt emergency services in the Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital as well as a dozen of other private hospitals. Earlier on Saturday, doctors stayed away from their service, except emergency, in the government and private medical facilities in protest. A police team deployed from the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police on Friday arrested eight practicing medical doctors from different health facilities of Birgunj on suspicion of using fake academic credentials to obtain professional licences. Likewise, six others, three each in Chitwan and Biratnagar, were arrested on similar charges on the same day.
