Kathmandu, July 30 Nepal Police has said it initiated departmental action against 1,419 cops, including a SSP, during the last fiscal 2015/16 for their involvement in unethical conduct and activities against the prevailing Police Act and Rules. According to a figure maintained by the NP Headquarters, 30 personnel along with two inspectors were sent home and 214, including three sub-inspectors, were disqualified from police service. However, the number of personnel facing departmental action in 2015/16 decreased to 1,419 from the previous fiscal 2014/15, thanks to the implementation of monitoring and evaluation system, said a senior official. The cops who faced action were found guilty either of violating the decorum of office or of getting involved in illegal activities, indulging in corruption and failing to fulfil their assigned duty. The official described it as the NP’s ‘clean-up drive within’ to rein in crooked cops, who have been tarnishing the image of the department. The action taken against the erring cops ranges from issuance of warning letters to dismissal from service, depending on the nature of offence. The competent authority opens investigation into charges against the personnel by the public or police officials before initiating departmental action. “We have also adopted reward and punishment policy to boost the morale of police personnel in their fight against crime. NP will reward the officials and personnel if they perform well,” said the official. NP Headquarters has issued a circular to all its subordinate offices, instructing them to abide by the order and take action against defiant personnel and adopt victim-friendly approach, dispense quick service and strengthen relations with the public. Police have developed a system wherein the public can lodge their grievances against any police personnel in all regions, zones and districts. Professional Standard Unit set up in police offices looks into police conduct and recommends action against the guilty.
