KATHMANDU: Nepal's Gaurika Singh entered the pool for Heat 1 of the women’s 100m backstroke event at the Olympics Aquatics Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday as the youngest athlete in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Singh, who is 13 years and 255 days old, completed the event in one minute and 8.45 seconds -- 1.14 seconds behind the national record of 1:7.31 that she had set during the 12th South Asian Games in India earlier this year.
Singh won her heat leaving behind Kosovo’s Rita Zeqiri and Samoa's Evelina Afoa in the three-player field. But she was ranked 31st among 34 swimmers, which meant she was not among the 16 athletes who qualified for the next round.Youngest athlete 'Darling Daughter of Nepal' made her country proud again by winning 100m Backstroke heat#Rio2016 pic.twitter.com/xxuRSENs5l
