Nepalgunj, August 7 Local leaders in Banke district have demanded that the concerned authority reconsider the draft of the local body restructuring. They argued that the draft on restructuring of village units and municipalities in Banke was not scientific. The Local Body Restructuring Commission had proposed four village units and one sub-metropolitan city and similar number of municipalities for the district. But local leaders claimed that the proposed restructuring had not considered the topography and population of the areas in question. Nepali Congress district president Krian Koirala said that the proposal did not take into account the access of locals, their participation and facilities when it came to determining the number of local bodies in the district. Similarly, CPN-UML district chairperson Ashok Koirala was of the opinion that a couple of local structures needed to be added for the district. “Separate clusters should be mulled for areas within and beyond the Rapti River,” he added. Likewise, CPN-Maoist Centre’s district coordinator IP Kharel pressed for seven local units in the district. Coordinator Kharel also demanded revising the threshold for population for deterring a local unit from the existing 50,000 population to 35,000.
