Cadres of Madhes-based parties burning copy of a decision paper during a discussion organised by the Local Bodiesu0092 Restructuring Commission in Rajbiraj, Saptari, on Wednesday.

Rajbiraj, August 10 Madhesi parties have obstructed the work of the Local Bodies Restructuring Commission in the preliminary phase in Saptari. Madhes-centred parties, which have been expressing dissatisfaction with the constitution and provincial structure, halted the work of the restructuring commission calling it a ploy to finish off federalism. The meeting of the Local Body Restructuring Commission Technical Cooperation Committee held in Rajbiraj to solicit suggestions on work conditions and working procedures on restructuring was halted by Madhesi parties today. When the DDC Monitoring and Planning Officer and Local Body Restructuring Commission Technical Cooperation Committee Saptari member Dhirendra Prasad Yadav started to speak at the meeting, Madhesi party leaders and cadres chanted slogans. The agitating leaders and cadres then set the decision booklet on fire. Yadav, who is also LDO of Saptari, said that the work of the commission was thrown off gear after Madhesi parties disrupted the meeting. Yadav said he would report the ground reality to the commission as work could not be conducted forcefully. “It is not possible to go ahead with the work without consensus among parties. The sooner they forge consensus, the faster the work of the commission will move,” Yadav added. Meanwhile, Madhesi parties alleged that the work of the commission was a conspiracy to bypass the demands put forth by them. “As many as 56 people shed their blood in the Tarai agitation. But, the government is paying no attention to address our demands,” Sadbhawana Party Saptari District Chairman Sunil Kumar Jha said. Jha added that work of the commission would not move ahead until their demands were met. Leaders of the NC and the CPN-UML are not happy with the modality of the commission for restructuring local bodies either. The commission has fixed 11 local bodies in Saptari. This has not gone down well with the NC and the UML in the district.
