KATHMANDU: The 70th Independence Day of India was celebrated amid a public ceremony held in the premises of the Indian Embassy here today. On this occasion, the Ambassador of India to Nepal, Ranjit, Rae hoisted the national flag and read out the message of the President of India. The Indian President’s message stresses India’s support for peace and stability in its neighbourhood. At the event, Ambassador Rae distributed cheques worth Rs 40 million and blankets to fourteen retired soldiers of Indian Armed Forces, their widows, next of kin and dependents. Books were also donated to 59 libraries, educational and training institutions located in different regions of Nepal, including those in remote districts.

— IndiaInNepal (@IndiaInNepal) August 15, 2016 On this occasion, 40 ambulances and eight buses were gifted to various hospitals, non-profit charitable organisations and educational institutions of different districts to strengthen education and health services in Nepal. Ambassador Rae presented 36 ambulances and six buses in the function in Kathmandu and four other ambulances and two buses were gifted by the Consulate General of India, in Birgunj of Parsa. The 70th Independence Day function was attended by Embassy officials, their families, members of the Indian community and other guests. The ceremony concluded with a cultural programme.
