India for Nepal’s prosperity: Indian prez

Kathmandu, August 19 Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has said India always wants to see a peaceful, stable and prosperous Nepal and reiterated India’s firm and continuous support to achieve these objectives. He said this to Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi, while receiving him at Rashtrapati Bhawan this evening. “As a close neighbour, India always wishes to see peace, stability and prosperity in Nepal,” a source quoted President Mukherjee as telling Nidhi. “India is happy to ensure Nepal’s prosperity.” Mukherjee also shared his enthusiasm to pay a state visit to Nepal on a mutually convenient date, according to a source at the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi. As a special envoy of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, he reached the Indian capital yesterday. He handed over the invitation of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari to her Indian counterpart for a visit to Nepal. He also discussed other high-level exchanges, including President Bhandari’s visit to India, which was called off at the last minute in May. Krishna Prasad Dhakal, charge d’affairs of Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi, and South Asia Division Head at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bhrigu Dhungana, were also present in the meeting. Earlier, Nidhi held a meeting with Indian Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj and discussed wide range of bilateral issues, including PM Dahal’s prospective visit to the southern neighbour next month. It is learnt that both sides have agreed that Dahal can begin his India visit on September 15 as proposed by the Indian side. Nidhi and Swaraj dwelt on the preparation for the forthcoming high-level visits, according to a release issued by the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi. On development cooperation, both sides stressed on the need to ensure time-bound implementation and completion of ongoing projects under bilateral cooperation. Besides, the possibility of identifying new projects for mutual benefits also figured in their talks, the release added. Nidhi also held a luncheon meeting with Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh. A wide range of issues, including strengthening border security, control of human trafficking, construction of Nepal Police Academy and enhancing cooperation in security matters, were discussed. In the morning, Nidhi participated in a function held by National Disaster Management Authority of India and discussed legal, policy and institutional arrangements made in India for disaster management. He is scheduled to call on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow morning. According to Press Information Bureau, Nidhi stated that India was Nepal’s vital neighbour and the two countries should further enhance their cooperation. The two leaders also agreed to make a joint visit to Indo-Nepal border area, added the statement.
