CIUDAD VICTORIA: Officials in northern Mexico say two shootouts between soldiers and suspected drug gang members resulted in 11 dead, including a bystander caught in the crossfire. The violence in Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Texas, prompted the temporary closure of the national highway that connects Tamaulipas state to central Mexico. The state government said in a statement that the armed confrontations began early Saturday. In the first, troops killed eight suspected criminals on the highway, which handles nearly half of the export-import cargo between Mexico and the United States. An hour later another shootout broke out nearby. Authorities say two suspects were killed, as was a woman who was traveling in her car on the highway.
