Kathmandu, October 7:
Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Badri Prasad Mandal today lauded the contribution of the Marwari community to the social sector. Speaking at the third anniversary of Artificial Organ Workshop organised by the Nepal National Marwari Council (NNMC) in the capital today, Mandal said that besides the industrial and commercial sectors, the Marbadi community had made a significant contribution to the social sector as well. Mandal said the Marwari community’s efforts in helping the needy was commendable and that the community had supported government efforts as well.
Mandal distributed artificial legs to 13 people and handed letters of appreciation to distinguished businessmen who had provided financial support to the NNMC. Aatma Ram Murarka, vice-president of NNMC, said that the organisation had focused since its establishment to provide services through one channel, rather than render services through many outlets.
Hulas Chand Golchha, former president of NNMC, said that there were 37 Marwari organisations affiliated to the NNMC, which had been providing economical support to run various social programmes. He said 352 students had received financial support worth Rs eight million for higher education through the organisation.
“Providing artificial legs to the disadvantaged people who have lost their limbs is akin to giving them a new life,” said Banwari Lal Mittal, a prominent business figure. The inactive members of the society could now be active in contributing their bit to the society, Mittal said, adding this would also boost the confidence of invalids.
