Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium, which is transmitted to humans and rodents by chigger mites.

CHITWAN: The spread of scrub typhus and dengue continues despite decreasing temperature in Chitwan district. The viruses of the diseases were known to be less effective during the autumn and the winter. Specialist doctors said the spread of the diseases would continue in case the viruses developed resistance and adapt the cold climate. They added that the concerned governmental bodies should arrange some study on various dimensions of the diseases. According to Ram KC, a health professional of District Public Health Office, Chitwan, 397 people out of 1,222 were found to have infected with scrub typhus. Similarly, 412 out of 1,622 were infected with dengue until now this year. Majority of dengue patients, 312 among the total 412 dengue patients, in Chitwan district are the residents of Ratnanagar Municipality. Until now, five deaths caused by scrub typhus in Chitwan district have been reported.  However, no casualties related to dengue have been reported.
