KATHMANDU: Children of the devastating 2015 earthquake epicentre, Barpak in Gorkha district, on Saturday shared their experience and learning during the disaster, with children from Martadi of Bajura district. It was the second round of the e-interaction between children from quake-affected districts and those of western Nepal organised by UNICEF Nepal that made it possible despite the physical distance between them. Earlier, on October 1, children of Sunkhani in Dolakha district had interacted with children of Sunawal of Nawalparasi district, about effects of the massive earthquake on them last year and ongoing reconstruction efforts. 'Through video conferencing technology,' the UN agency said in a statement today, 'The children in Barpak gave some life-saving information to their peers in Bajura, more than 1,000 kilometres away, on how to prepare themselves for future earthquake as well as measures to follow right after disasters.' 'It is good to identify safe places inside and outside houses to survive from an earthquake,' the statement quoted one Jasmina Ghale from Barpak. 'Do not hang heavy items above your bed or sitting area; prepare a 'go bag' with life-saving items such as dry food, basic medicine, torch, tarpaulin and water.' Those in Bajura also conveyed their issues and feelings through poems and traditional deuda song, according to the statement. 'The exchange of information between the children from two sides included the aftermath of the earthquake especially regarding the safety of schools and the situation of health care; about issues regarding child labour; child marriage; about their villages; about festivals, and how they brought together diverse people.' The e-interaction was backstopped with technical support from Changa Foundation and Meeting Point.
