Master and
Commander HHHH
Director: Peter Weir
Starring: Russell Crowe,
Paul Bettany, Max Pirkis
A story of courage, ‘Master and Commander’ the movie is as amazing as the book. In two and half hours, it sails you through turbulent times, rough tides and trying experiences. Patrick O’Brian gripped you with his tale; Peter Weir keeps you seated with his picture. This is a story that hurls you into a sea of emotions — trials, tribulations, victory and tranquillity.
The year is 1805. Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), who once served under Lord Nelson, is now captain of HMS Surprise, a British frigate. They are sailing on waters where the French fleets are keeping vigil.
Aubrey is a man of honour, a true leader of his little wooden world. But he is constantly questioned for his reasons on waging battle with the French by surgeon and friend Dr Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany). When time tests Aubrey’s worthiness, he stands a true commander.
The naval battle sequences are fantastic and the background scores are truly evocative of the feelings that the movie creates. Weir has done a splendid job with the screenplay and direction. Paul Bettany and Russell Crowe hit it off again as a great onscreen duo. It is no wonder that the movie earned 10 Oscar nominations and two wins. After the Tolkien classics, this movie is definitely the movie of the year! — Abha Eli Phoboo
