KATHMANDU: Nepal registered a consolation win over Hong Kong by seven wickets during the ongoing ACC Emerging Teams Cup, after Dipendra Singh Airee and Sharad Vesawkar partnered for an unbroken century stand for the fourth wicket. The match was played at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Bangladesh on Thursday. Airee clobbered a six over a bowler's head to long off side's screen as Nepal chased down the target in the 44.2 overs. Earlier, Nepal had lost both of the matches under the tournament to Pakistan by six wickets and Bangladesh by 83 runs. Nepal's opening batting, however, still remained a concern as the new combination of Gyanendra Malla and Asif Sheikh failed to yield dividends as Sheikh failed for painstaking eight runs off 23 balls. Stand-in skipper Gyanendra Malla who failed twice against the pace attacks of Pakistan and Bangladesh resurrected his batting performance with a gritty 70 runs off 83 deliveries. He held the innings together from one end as Nepal lost Sheikh and Dilip Nath in quick succession. Nath contributed 12 runs off 29 balls. Malla was clean-bowled by Jhatha Subraymanyan as he served a peach of a delivery which nipped back to hit the off stump after pitching in, off stump line. Malla was a delight to watch as he played some scintillating cover drives, back foot punch to offsides and short arm jab to mid-wickets as he sent the ball 11 times to the fence. Nepal were reeling at 115 for 3 at the 26th over when in-form Sharad Vesawkar joined Dipendra Singh Airee in the middle, Nepal still needing 100 runs for victory. Dipendra Singh Aairee, playing only his fifth international match, registered his second 50 of the competition with the match-winning knock of 60 not out as he struck five fours and a maximum. Aairee carried his good form of bat to the ACC Emerging Teams Cup as what he had left in the World Cricket League Championship game against Kenya. He had scored 60 runs in the winning cause against the Kenyans, only in his second international outings. He also scored 56 runs against Bangladesh in the losing cause in the earlier game of the tournament. Vesawkar played the fire-for-ice innings of 55 runs off 51 balls as he hammered three towering sixes and three hit to the boundary. His whirlwind innings propelled Nepal to reach the target in only 44.2 overs. Nepal's stand-in skipper Gyanendra Malla was adjudged Man-of-the-Match for his overall performance in the team's victory. Hong Kong bowlers toiled hard as they failed to take further Nepali wickets as Airee and Vesawkar did not offer them a sniff of chances. Jhatha Subraymanyan was the pick of the Hong Kong bowler with 10-0-31-2. Subraymanyan at times bowled unplayable deliveries asking lots of questions to the Nepali batsmen with his pace, line and length. Nizakat Khan chipped in with a wicket. Despite the win, Nepal bowed out of the tournament from the group stage after losing to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Earlier, Nepal had won the toss and elected to field first. Nepal restrict Hong Kong to 214 KATHMANDU: Nepal have restricted Hong Kong to 214 runs in the first innings of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup being held at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium Academy Ground No 2 in Cox Bazaar, Bangladesh on Thursday. The first innings ended when Avinash Karn took two consecutive wickets of Kyle Christie and Ehsan Khan, the ninth and 10th wickets. Before that, Karn had also taken Jhatha Subraymanyan's wicket. Nepal had a hard time taking the first wicket. Opening batsmen Cameron McAulsen and Anshuman Rath made a sturdy partnership of 95 runs off 127 balls. Gyanendra Malla finally took the first wicket for Nepal by catching Rath's shot in his own bowling. Hong Kong's second wicket fell soon as Malla took McAulsen's wicket at 22.2 overs. Like Malla, Bhuwan Karki and Sushan Bhari also took two wickets each. Karki bowled Babar Hayat at 34.3 overs and Shahid Wasif at 46.4 overs while Bhari bowled Wajid Shah and Waqas Khan at 41.3 and 41.5 overs respectively. Sandeep Lamichhane took a wicket; Nizakat Khan at 23.6 overs. Earlier, Nepal had won the toss and elected to field first.
