Owen set for surgery

LONDON: Michael Owen joined David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville on the list of England players to have lengthy layoffs because of broken foot bones. England’s World Cup team could almost be renamed Metatarsal United after Owen limped out of Newcastle’s 2-0 loss at Tottenham on Saturday and will be out of action for at least eight weeks after breaking the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. He hobbled away from White Hart Lane on crutches and Newcastle manager Graeme Souness said on Sunday the striker will have surgery “sooner rather than later.” — AP

Viola arrested

SAO PAULO: Former Brazil player Viola was arrested on Sunday near Sao Paulo on charges of illegal possession of firearms after a domestic altercation. Viola allegedly was illegally carrying a 12-gauge gun during an altercation with his wife in Barueri, police said. Other details on the altercation were not immediately available, but police said no one had been injured. Viola, whose full name is Paulo Sergio Rosa, was a member of Brazil’s 1994 World Cup winning side in the US. He also played for Spain’s Valencia and starred for Corinthians in Brazil. — AP
