Mario Ancic beat Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-0, 6-2 on Monday at the Adelaide International in Ancic’s first match since helping Croatia win the Davis Cup last month. Ancic next faces Belgian Xavier Malisse, a 7-6, 6-3 winner over Australian qualifier Peter Luczak.

In other matches, No 3 Tommy Robredo of Spain beat Austria’s Jergen Melzer 7-5, 6-4 and No 6 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic beat Agustin Calleri of 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.

Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis will play on centre court on Tuesday.
