Over 46 metric tonnes of garbage managed from major rivers in Valley

  KATHMANDU: As high as 46 metric tonnes of garbage was collected from various major rivers and ring road areas in Kathmandu Valley on Saturday. Around 15 metric tonnes of solid waste was managed while cleaning the Bagmati River as a part of the Bagmati River Clean-Up Campaign that entered 213th week today, according to campaigner Umesh Bohora.Campaigners cleaned on the stretch from Tripureshower to Naya Pul area in Kathmandu. More than 400 volunteers participated in the clean up drive where the Chief of the High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization, Jyoti Kumar Shrestha, took his oath as well from all the participants for their commitment to help lean the Bagmati River, a holy river of the Hindus and a major source of water from the Kathmandu Valley. Participants joining today's weekly also included personnel from security agencies including Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, Nepal as well as Sisnupani Nepal, Friends Club Lalitpur, Nepal CGI and officials from the High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of the Bagmati Civilization among others. Similarly, some 100 volunteers representing Pudasaini Maitri Samaj and Ramro Jorpati Hamro Jorpati campaign extracted two metric tonnes of solid waste from the Guiheshwori stretch of the Bagmati river, said Samaj's President Uttam Pudasaini. The clean-up drive launched by the Samaj entered 174th week today. The highlight of the today's event was the door-to-door awareness campaign conducted from the Ram Mandir in Battisputali to Maitidevi via Setopul where several public figures such as comedian Sitaram Kattel aka Dhurmus and scholar LP Bhanu Sharma and the like marked their presence. One metric tonne of garbage was extracted from the Bagmati River from this stretch, shared campaigner Rohit Giri. More than 300 persons were presented in the clean up drive led by the newly elected Chair of Kathmandu Metropolitan City ward no 30, Dal Bahadur Karki. Likewise, the Bishnumati Clean-up Campaign, which is into its 144th week, scooped out garbage amounting to 7 metric tonnes from the Trakeshower Stupa in Tarkeshower Municipality ward no 10, added campaigner Giri. Meanwhile, one metric tonnes of waste products was extracted by the Til Ganga Women Group from the Til Ganga stretch of the Bagmati river. Around 68 volunteers took part in the event. Moreover, Ring Road Clean-up Campaign that entered its 9th week today managed 20 metric tonnes of waste from the area starting from the Samakhusi Chowk stretch. More than 250 locals as well as hotel entrepreneurs took part in the clean-up drive. Campaigners shared that similar kind of river clean-up drive is being conducted in various 26 rivers across the country being influenced by the Bagmati River Clean-Up Campaign.
