3,366 nominated to contest for 685 posts in Jhapa election

Jhapa, June 19 As many as 3,366 candidates representing 13 political parties have filed their nominations in Jhapa to contest 685 posts in the upcoming second phase of local elections due on June 28. According to Chief Election Officer Sudarshanraj Pande of Jhapa, four parties, namely, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-MC and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have fielded their candidates for all 685 posts. Parties such as Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal, Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum, Nepal Communist Party-ML and Federal Limbuwan Forum have fielded their candidates for select posts. Jhapa comprises 15 local bodies, including eight municipalities and seven rural municipalities. While a total of 441 candidates will be elected from the municipalities, 244 others will be elected from the rural municipalities. Similarly, while the candidates vying for mayoral and deputy mayoral posts at municipalities are 81 and 62 respectively, 46 and 42 candidates are in the fray for seven posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson for rural municipalities. As for independent candidates, as many as 25 of them have filed their nominations for the mayoral post at various municipalities, and 13 for deputy mayoral posts. Likewise, six and five independent candidates have thrown their hats in the ring for the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson of rural municipalities.
