Minister pledges to address demands of working journalists

Kathmandu, July 30 Minister for Information and Communications Mohan Bahadur Basnet today pledged to address demands of working journalists. Receiving a report of the Minimum Wages Fixation Committee at the ministry today, Minister Basnet said, “Problems of working journalists will be resolved. I have heard that some working journalists do not even get minimum wages. The problem will be addressed.” Minister Basnet expressed the view that the role of media would be important in the reform activities being carried out by the ministry. He also assured that he would take initiatives to address issues raised by the report by holding consultation with all bodies concerned. Committee Chairperson Poshan KC said the report was prepared by holding consultation with working journalists. According to a survey carried out by the committee, 32.3 per cent journalists and media workers are still deprived of minimum wage. Likewise, only 74.2 per cent journalists have received appointment letters. The report further said 66.9 per cent journalists were regularly paid their salary while around 9.9 per cent were paid once in two months and 23.1 per cent once in three or more months.
