Kathmandu, September 1 Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhi Prasad Yadav today said that the EC would adopt zero tolerance policy against violation of election code of conduct. Addressing an orientation programme organised for government secretaries and joint secretaries, who would be deployed in Province 2 to monitor poll code violation, CEC Yadav said, “Candidates want to win election at any cost and incidents of polls code violations have been rising on the pretext of distributing relief to flood victims.” He added that the monitors should play an effective role in checking poll code violation. He directed government secretaries and joint secretaries to work impartially. CEC Yadav said the country would get stability once all elections were held. The EC has deployed 18 officials, including two secretaries, to monitor poll code violations in 136 local levels of eight districts of Province 2 where the third phase of local level elections is being held on September 18. The election body said those monitors would start work from Monday. Meanwhile, EC Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Shah said the EC would enforce the election code of conduct strictly. Addressing a press meet at EC’s media centre, Shah said a separate mechanism was created to prevent poll code violations. He, however, refused to divulge further. “We could not effectively enforce the poll code of conduct in the first and second phase of elections,” said Shah, adding that the EC would take legal action against anyone found violating election code of conduct. He said the EC in the past had sought clarification from deputy prime minister, ministers and lawmakers for violating poll code of conduct. He informed that former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had submitted written clarification to the EC and committed not to repeat such incidents in future. The EC had asked former PM Nepal to furnish clarification within 24 hours for wearing cap with election symbol of CPN-UML during door-to-door campaign.
