Kathmandu, Sept 9 Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is all set to fly to New York on Sept 19 to address the 72nd General Assembly of the United Nations. Officials involved in preparation for the PM’s participation in UNGA said PM Deuba will fly to New York after the conclusion of the third phase of local level elections and Constitution Day event. He is scheduled to address the UNGA on Sept 23. “Although we are yet to finalise the exact date for the PM’s departure to New York, he will most probably leave on September 19 right after attending the Constitution Day event,” said PM Deuba’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Dinesh Bhattarai. The third phase of civic polls local level polls is being held on September 18, while the Constitution Day falls on the following day. The PM’s delegation to the UN will include DPM and Foreign Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who is currently on an official visit to China, and other senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to a ministry official who is actively involved in preparations for UNGA, DPM Mahara may leave for New York a few days ahead of PM Deuba’s trip. “Since DPM Mahara is currently in China, it will be finalised only after his return,” the official said. On the sidelines of the UNGA, PM Deuba will also hold talks with his counterparts and heads of state from various countries. “Among other important issues, talks will be held on Nepal’s bid for UN Human Rights Council membership during the meetings,” said the ministry official. Deuba plans to return home on September 24. On his way home, the PM is likely to make a stopover in Oman, where he will meet Nepali ambassadors in the region and other stakeholders, including Nepali migrant workers. The ministry official said since there were millions of Nepali migrant workers in the region, the PM making a stopover there made a lot of sense.
