The word ‘discipline’ has been much used for lecturing people a lot about what they should do and not do and how they should control their words and actions so that they do not deviate from what is thought to be the right path, they do not invite trouble, they can concentrate on their work and perform better. In sum discipline is thought to be the key to success in every field of life. Discipline should not be regarded as the bitter essence of life or a burden on you which forces you to sacrifice fun to achieve so-called success. Actually discipline is a way of leading your life in a positive direction in order to realise your dreams. Discipline is not just keeping your hands folded or your mouth shut or adopting the army stance. It is the regulation of your mind and body which puts the right degree and kind of control over your speech and action. But it is always easier to preach than to practice. Our teachers and our parents tell us what and how to do or not to do things; they want us to be perfect and to realize our full potential. But if we see how they themselves have practiced it and to what extent, they often leave a lot to be desired too. I have myself realized the importance of discipline in my life; but temptation often gets in the way. For students there is the pressure of studies, and they have limited time to do many things. But discipline is all about keeping these within limits and training our minds to seek a proper balance, and what to reject and what to accept. Those who can do this can climb to greater heights of success whereas those who cannot do this stumble often in life. This training of the mind greatly helps you become successful. A great sense of discipline comes to some people more naturally; to many others it is a matter of constant practice, making mistakes and learning to avoid them; but to still others it becomes something of a puzzle or even realization never comes. It is a lifelong process of learning and improving, making conscious efforts to get inspired and motivated. A disciplined mind is not disappointed by failures. People with self-discipline keep trying whatever hurdles may come in the way. A general absence of self-discipline in public life has led to widespread corruption, immoral practices, and a failure of the system in the country. There is a wide gap between preaching and practice.
