DPM Mahara to fly to New York today for UN assembly

Kathmandu, Sept 16 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara will leave for New York tomorrow to attend the 72nd Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. DPM Mahara will be accompanied by MoFA Joint Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal, and his personal secretary Yubaraj Chaulagain, according to a foreign ministry official. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is scheduled to address the UNGA on Sept 23, will leave for New York on Sept 19 after attending the Constitution Day event. PM Deuba will be accompanied by his wife and Nepali Congress lawmaker Arzu Rana Deuba, Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi and his foreign affairs adviser Dinesh Bhattarai, among other senior foreign ministry officials. On the sidelines of the UNGA, PM Deuba will hold talks with his counterparts and heads of state from various countries. Among other important issues, the PM will seek support for Nepal’s bid for UN Human Rights Council membership during the meetings. DPM Mahara will also hold a series of high-level meetings in New York, besides heading a foreign ministerial-level meeting of the SAARC Council of Ministers. Mahara is the current chair of SAARC. PM Deuba, who is scheduled to return home on September 24, will make a stopover in Oman, where he will meet Nepali ambassadors in the region and other stakeholders, including Nepali migrant workers. The 72nd Session of the UNGA convened at UN Headquarters on September 12, while the General Debate will open on September 19 under the theme ‘Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet’.
