Kathmandu, September 20 Dr Govinda KC, senior orthopaedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, has taken strong exception to the tabling of the revised Medical Education Bill in the Parliament. The bill was presented in the Parliament yesterday. He has demanded that the Medical Education Bill incorporate the recommendations made by the Kedar Bhakta Mathema-led panel. “The revised bill presented in the Parliament states that medical colleges that have already received letter of intent will be issued licence if they meet necessary standards. Dr KC strongly opposes this provision and wants the bill to incorporate the recommendations of the Mathema-led panel,” informed Dr Abhishek Raj Singh, one of the members of Dr KC’s talk team. The Mathema-led panel has suggested to the government not to grant affiliation to any new medical college in the Valley for a decade. Dr KC has also threatened to launch fresh fast-unto-death as Kathmandu University has ignored the government’s decision regarding MBBS fees. He has demanded that the KU-affiliated colleges abide by the government decision. The government has fixed a fee ceiling of Rs 3,850,000 for MBBS students inside Kathmandu and Rs 4,245,000 for students outside Kathmandu Valley. Likewise, fee ceiling for BDS course has been fixed at Rs 1,932,612. In addition, Dr KC has demanded establishment of Karnali Medical Science Academy and speedy progress on establishment of government-run medical colleges in Kailali and Dang. He has also demanded that the government set up medical colleges in Doti, Dadeldhura, Dhanusha,Mahottari, Udaypur, Panchthar and Terathum, among other places. He has also demanded suspension of TU office-bearers and probe into irregularities in the purchase of land plots by Nepal Oil Corporation.
