Families, friends remember Sharma, 166 others

Lalitpur, September 23 Rupak Memorial Foundation organised a cycle ride to mark the 25th anniversary of PIA plane crash in Lele of Lalitpur district today. A total of 167 passengers, including former national football team skipper and FIFA Referee Rupak Raj Sharma as well as FIFA Assistant Referees Roshan Kumar Shrestha and Hira Ratna Bajracharya, were on board the PIA Airbus that crashed at Lele on September 28, 1992 en route to Kathmandu from Karachi. The cycle ride — which was flagged off by former national team skipper and former IGP of Nepal Police Achut Krishna Kharel — kicked off at the RMF building in Satdobato and went to PIA Memorial Park in Lele. IGP of Nepal APF Singha Bahadur Shrestha, AIG Jay Bahadur Chand, former APF AIG Rabi Raj Thapa and national cycling team members Ajay Pandit Chhetri, Buddhi Bahadur Tamang, Narayan Gopal Maharana and Raj Kumar Shrestha also joined the tribute ride. The participants attended a candle lighting ceremony to pay tribute to the deceased passengers before the participants returned to RMF building. The ride was organised with the objective to pay tribute to the deceased passengers and raise awareness on air safety. A separate candle lighting ceremony was held at the RMF building before the plenery on Airspace Scenario in Nepal. The speakers of the interaction included Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Director General Sanjiv Gautam, Aviation enthusiast Heman Arjyal and Chairperson of Sky Foundation Dorjee Sherpa.
