Scrub typhus is caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium, which is transmitted to humans and rodents by chigger mites.

KATHMANDU: The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division put forward its preparation to purchase kit – which is used to detect dengue and scrub typhus viruses. Division Director Dr Bhim Acharya clarified that there was no shortage of kit as rumoured. 'The short of kit is not big in volume. We had sent a letter to the Supply for the purchase of 5,000 kit each. The process to this effect was already initiated'. Last year dengue took toll of four people and this year it is nine. It has been detected among 2,022 people this year while it was found among 1,500 people. According to the Division, the number of people infected from the disease this time around is higher than the previous years.
