Kathmandu, October 26 Smart Telecom has said that it will launch its 4G (fourth-generation) telecom service from Saturday across Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara simultaneously. With this, Smart Telecom is set to become the third telecom company to roll out 4G service in the country after Nepal Telecom (NT) and Ncell. Sabin Shrestha, chief administrative officer of Smart Telecom, said the firm will introduce 4G service for its customers in Kathmandu and Pokhara under technology neutral spectrum within existing 1800 MHz bandwidth granted to the telecom operator. As per Shrestha, Smart Telecom has separated 10 MHz dedicated frequency for 4G service unlike NT and Ncell which have separated 5 MHz. Smart Telecom recently started offering its telecommunication services in Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. However, it has already installed BTS towers in different places in Valley to roll out 4G. Meanwhile, Smart Telecom plans to soon install additional 213 4G-compatible Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in different cities to make its 4G service more reliable. Out of almost 350 BTS towers of Smart Telecom installed across the country currently, only 50 BTS towers are 4G-compatible. “In the second phase, we also plan to launch 4G service in Nepalgunj, Birgunj and Chitwan.” Of the three telecom firms that have acquired 4G licence from NTA, Smart Telecom has less than one per cent, while NT and Ncell have 48 per cent and 45 per cent market share, respectively, in the telecommunication industry of Nepal.
