Kathmandu, November 2 Fifty patients have availed of CT scan services at Thapathali-based Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital since it started the services in July. The hospital, which had so far been providing the services on alternate days, has decided to provide regular CT scan services from tomorrow. “We will be providing regular CT scan services to patients from tomorrow,” said Dr Prabhat Pandey, consultant radiologist at the hospital. “Patients had to be referred to other government and private hospitals when the hospital lacked the machine. It used to be time consuming and costly for the patients. Now with availability of the machine in the hospital, patients will not have to go elsewhere for CT scan services,” said Ranu Thapa, administrator at the hospital. “It is very easy for us to diagnose tumour in the uterus of patients. In addition, the machine is also helpful in detecting stone in kidneys or urinary tract, which is rarely visualised with ultrasound. Anyone suspected of having kidney stone can opt for our CT scan test in the hospital,” Dr Pandey further added. The hospital will also provide emergency CT scan services for patients, according to Thapa. A minimum of 400 patients, a majority of them pregnant women and expectant mothers, visit the hospital each day. Sixty children are born each day in the hospital. Computed tomography (CT or CAT scan) is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of x-rays and computer technology to produce cross-sectional images (often called slices), both horizontally and vertically, of the body. A CT scan shows detailed images of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, and organs. CT scans are more detailed than standard x-rays.
