Eight killed, 23 injured in Trishuli bus plunge

Chitwan, November 29 At least eight persons were killed and 23 others injured when a bus plunged into the Trishuli River at Chumlingtar of Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-3 in Chitwan on Wednesday morning. The ill-fated-bus was heading to Arghakahnchi from Kathmandu. The whereabouts of three others is unknown. Seven persons died on the spot while another breathed his last while undergoing treatment. Four of the deceased have been identified as Laxmi Poudel (43) of Sandhikharka Municipality in Arghakhanchi, Nudraj Adhikari (52) of Arghakhanchi, Amar Bahadur Shahi (32), of Dailekh and Krishna Dhakal (52) of Bardaghat, Nawalparasi. Laxmi died while undergoing treatment at B and B Hospital in Kathmandu. District Police Office Chitwan Chief Superintendent of Police Deepak Thapa said the bus plunged into the Trishuli River after colliding with a truck coming from opposite direction. Of the injured, 21 were bus passengers while two were on board the truck. Nine injured persons are receiving treatment at Bharatpur-based College of Medical Sciences and Teaching Hospital, while 12 others have undergone treatment at various health facilities in Kathmandu. Area Police Office Muglin has taken the truck driver and helper, who sustained minor injuries, under control after minor treatment at a polyclinic at Muglin. The bus has completely sunk in the river. Attempts to take the bus out of  the river had been in vain till late evening. The bus departed at 5:40am from the capital. According to passengers, there were 32 persons, including the driver and helper, on board the bus. The accident site lies 16 kilometres away from Muglin. The bus (Lu 2 Kha 291) heading towards Narayangadh from Kathmandu collided with a truck (Na 6 Kha 4972) before plunging about 100 metres into the river, at Fisling, at around 9:15 am today, according to Chitwan District Police Office Chief, Superintendent of Police Deepak Thapa. Subsequently, the ill-fated bus submerged in water killing six passengers aboard on the spot and injuring others who were rescued. It is yet to establish the identities of the passengers, said police. Five of the injured have been rushed to a health institution in Kathmandu while others are sent to a hospital in Bharatpur, informed police. A joint team from the police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force have been carrying out the rescue efforts at the incident site. The bus had left for Arghakhanchi from Kathmandu at 5:40 am picking up 26 passengers from Balaju. (UPDATED) 6 dead, 15 hurt as bus plunges into Trishuli River in Chitwan CHITWAN: At least six persons died on the spot while injured 15 others were rescued from a bus that fell into the Trishuli River in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-3 along the Prithvi Highway in Chitwan district on Wednesday morning. The bus (Lu 2 Kha 291) heading towards Narayangadh from Kathmandu skidded of the road and plunged into the river killing six passengers and injuring others, at Chumlingtar , at around 9:15 am today, according to Superintendent of Police Deepak Thapa at the District Police Office, Chitwan. Meanwhile, a joint team from the police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force is making effort to rescue others, said SP Thapa. The death toll could reach more as the bus immersed in water, said police. The ill-fated bus was ferrying the passengers from Kathmandu to Arghakhanchi. Further details into the incident is awaited.
