Guthi Sansthan seeks role in reconstruction of temples

Kathmandu, December 14 Guthi Sansthan, the body responsible for regulating financial and administrative matters of a majority of temples in the country, is seeking a role in the reconstruction of temples destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes. According to officials of Guthi Sansthan, more than 80 per cent of the temples in Kathmandu Valley are under Guthi Sansthan’s purview. However, the body has been given no role in reconstruction process. Guthi Sansthan had submitted a list of 341 temples to the governmental seeking Rs 14 billion for their reconstruction. A total 717 temples and 647 sattals are under its purview. However, it was not provided any budget due to which reconstruction of many temples in the Valley remains in limbo. Reconstruction of heritage monuments damaged in the earthquake is being undertaken largely by the Department of Archaeology, Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust and Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Spokesperson for Guthi Sansthan Saroj Thapalia said they were awaiting budget for the reconstruction of some guthi-managed shrines. It has prepared a complete cost estimation for reconstruction of Kumari house of Basantapur, Mahankal temple, Ranamukteshwor of New Road, Jangam Matha of Bhaktapur.
