Kathmandu, February 5:

World Health Organization (WHO) has proposed a global goal of reducing cancer-related deaths rates by 2 per cent annually from 2006 to 2015, a press release issued by the WHO said. Achievement of this goal would avert over 8 million of the projected 84 million deaths due to cancer in the next decade, the WHO added.

An estimated 7.6 million people died of cancer in 2005 and 84 million people will die in the next 10 years. Of the total cancer related deaths, 1.3 million people die of lung caner, almost 1 million die of stomach cancer, 662,000 people die of liver cancer, 655,000 people die with colon cancer and 502,000 people are dying due to breast cancer in every year, the relase said. The WHO estimates that over 40 per cent of all cancers can be prevented.
