  • The single transferable vote provision bypasses the Parliament’s decision
Kathmandu, December 20 CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that ordinance on formation of the National Assembly recommended by the government to the president could not be issued since it was against the constitution. Addressing a programme organised by the left alliance in the capital today, UML Chair Oli said the ordinance could not be issued as the current government had put the provision of single transferable vote system bypassing the parliamentary committee’s decision to form the national assembly through majority voting. “The ordinance cannot be the means for any particular political party to misuse power. The new government will be formed after a fresh mandate and the new government will submit the ordinance,” Oli said. He also said that it is merely an illusion to say the new government cannot be formed without the national assembly. Expressing displeasure at the statement by the government spokesperson today, Oli urged the concerned all not to drag the president into controversy. He also asked all not to harbour doubts on unification of left parties and political stability and prosperity. “A socialism-oriented new party will be formed with the unification of the UML and Maoist Centre. It is not the swallowing of one party by another,” Oli said. Likewise, UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the Nepali Congress would suffer further if it delayed handing over power to the new government. He added that an integrated community movement would be formed as the unification of the UML and Maoist Centre had already been approved by the people and party cadres. Also speaking at the programme, Maoist Centre leader Narayankaji Shrestha said that there would be no excuse on the way to prosperity as the communists had obtained majority in the parliament.
